The Department of Mechanical Engineering confirmed Musa Bondaris Palungan as a new Doctor of Manufacturing Materials, Monday (8/May/2017). Took a dissertation entitled The Effect of King Pineapple Leaf Fiber (Agave Cantala Roxb) Fumigated Towards the Fiber-Epoxy Matrix Compatibility Dr. Moses managed to get a title of sangat memuaskan.

In his dissertation, the lecturer of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Engineering Christian University of Indonesia Paul Makassar is researching the Pineapple King fiber. King pineapple plant (Agave Cantala Roxb) is a plant that can be grown in lowland and hill with a stem height about 150-200 cm and the leaves contain a lot of fiber with a length of 90-100 cm. These plants are found in Tana Toraja and North Toraja, South Sulawesi Province.

King pineapple plants grow naturally and resistant to plant disease. It is easily cultivated and traditionally king pineapple leaf fibers have been used by the people in Tana Toraja and North Toraja since long time ago as a raw material straps and clothing hereditary until nowadays.

Based on the customs and culture in Tana Toraja and North Toraja, king pineapple leaf fiber, before being used as raw material for straps and clothing especially for wrapping bodies, should be treated fumigated so that it could be strong and durable for hundreds of years. It is very interesting to study scientifically to reveal the king pineapple leaf fiber characterization before and after the fumigation treatment that can be applied as reinforcement in composite materials.

Based on these results of this research it is seen that fumigation treatment would affect the King Pineapple Leaf Fiber (KPLF) chemical, physical and mechanical and can be recommended KPLF has a high mechanical strength making it suitable to be used as composite materialsreinforcement with applications that could receive transportation and structural loading. In its application, before KPLF been used as a composite material reinforcement it should be  fumigated treated for 15 hours at a temperature of 450C to  Increase the KPLF strength.

Djoko Kustono, M.Pd, as guest examiner. While the supervisory board consists of Prof. Dr. Ir. Rudy Soenoko, M.Eng.Sc, as Supervisor, Dr. Eng. Yudy Surya Irawan, ST., M. Eng, as the first Supervisor, and Dr. Ir. Eng. Anindito Purnowidodo, ST., M. Eng, as Supervisor II.

In this Open Examination also attended and gave a speech, Benyamin Tangaran, S.T., M.T. As Vice Rector I UKI Paul Makassar. That afternoon examination then closed with a photo session. (emis/mic)
